Who is closer to being BACK? FSU or da U?
Discussion started by Anita Cruz , on 16 June 04:46 PM
I'm gonna go with the Canes on this one. I think Harris is the better QB than Ponder (Sorry FSU, that's just what this girl thinks !). Whipple will really put together a good offensive attack and Miami already has the better defense. It will be a good game vs FSU as always, but I think in the national eye Miami will continue the success they had for the first half of the year last year.

Anita, I think you have to remember that Miami was a dropped pass in the end zone (FSU game) away from not being the media darling early last season. Take a look at their season last year. While it was not a bad season and better than FSUs, it was not a great year. I already mentioned how they got a gift from FSU. They beat a GT team when they had more than a week to prepare for the triple option (which is Georgia Tech's weakness), lost to a decent, but not amazing VT, and then beat a Bradford-less Oklahoma that was still trying to find a new identity. Suddenly da U is back. They went on to lose arguably every "big" game after that to Clemson, UNC, and Wisconsin. All the remaining wins were against mediocre to weak teams including USF who yes did beat FSU, but then lost 5 of their 8 final games. I'm not sure either FSU or Miami is back, but FSU could have easily had a better record last year than Miami if they had even an average defense rather than one of the worst in the country. I think the defense will improve and you will see FSU rattle off a few more wins purely because of that and if Ponder can come back strong from injury then I have a feeling FSU will be back even quicker.

Harris is good and the Canes have a good set of receivers, but something tells me they are still a little behind. And i think some of this could be because Miami is currently in the tougher ACC division. Also an early loss to Ohio State could hurt them in the national eye of being "back". If they beat Ohio State and Pitt then I am sure the talk will be very similar to what we saw last year with Miami getting plenty of attention after starting out the season with victories over FSU and Oklahoma.

However, if they slip up early, they will set them back, and it's hard to be back if they can't win their division and play in the ACC championship game which I don't think they will with Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech competing against them.

I have to take my Garnet and Gold glasses off for a minute to answer this question. I think both teams will be improved, but as much as I love the Noles I think the Canes may have the better year this year. Harris had a pretty good year last year, albeit a little wild towards the end, but the entire year experience will help him tremendously plus he has a great group of players to pass to. If the O-line can give him the time he needs then he should be poised to have a great season. The Canes have a tricky schedule and I reserve the right to change my mind if they get blown out early in the season, but even if they lose to Ohio State they could still end up having a better year than FSU.
